I posted a few weeks ago about my son’s 4th birthday party for which I created most of the decor. One item that I made for his party was a “Happy Birthday” DIY party banner. This is something that’s very easy to make, and it adds a personal touch to any type of party. You could create this type of pennant banner for a baby shower, wedding shower, birthday party, anniversary party, etc. – you get the idea.
Since my son had a Super Hero-themed party, I used comic book pages to make the banner. However, you could use any type of colored or patterned paper for this. Scrapbook paper works great. (And don’t worry, I bought a dollar box of comic books online – I didn’t cut up anything valuable! I hope…)
Next, I used a small hole-punch to punch tiny holes in each of the top corners of my pennants.
I printed the letters onto colored construction paper in the appropriate size and desired color, and cut them into circles using pinking shears, which gave me the jagged edges around each letter. I used a circle template to trace around each letter first so they’d be about the same size. Anything round that’s about the size you want works fine. (I used the inside of a roll of packing tape.) I used a glue stick to adhere the letters to each comic book pennant.
Then, I threaded baker’s twine through each hole in the pennant to create my banner. After all of the pennants had been threaded with the baker’s twine, I was able to slide them around and space them out the way I wanted them. Then, I simply taped the banner to the wall. You can tie it or tape it, whichever works best depending on where you are placing the banner.
This was a very inexpensive, easy, not terribly time-consuming addition to my son’s party decor. I may even use it next year and just replace the number!
Feel free to leave a comment. I read them all!
