I was very excited recently when I found some cute red and white chevron gift wrap in the beloved Target dollar bin, and immediately the wheels in my head started turning, thinking about what I would whip up with it. One of the things I decided on was this inexpensive DIY Painted Glass Framed Holiday Art. When I say inexpensive, I’m talking $2.00. That’s one dollar for the gift wrap and one dollar for the frame (from the dollar store). I already had the glass paint and supplies on hand. In case you missed my recent Holiday Gift Guide, this paint was named as one of my favorite things. It is so much fun to use! We even got some for my mother in-law for Christmas – hopefully she will have fun with it too.
If you’d like to make this craft, here’s what you’ll need:
- Picture frame
- Wrapping paper or scrapbook paper
- Glass Paint (I used Martha Stewart opaque glass paint in “Pesto,” available at Michael’s.)
- Paint Dauber
- Stencils
- Martha Stewart glass scraper (optional – for touch-ups)
- Scissors
Martha Stewart glass paint and small paint dauber. |
First, cut a sheet of wrapping paper and insert it into your picture frame. Then, line up your stencils to spell whatever festive message you’d like. Since I only have one of each letter, I usually insert “place-holder” letters if a word has more than one of the same letter. Then I go back and insert the correct letter after I’ve used it elsewhere. This helps me get the spacing right.
Dot the paint on with your dauber, using quick motions. Remove the stencils as quickly as you can, while the paint is still wet. If you have any smudges or need to touch up the edges, use a small scraper after the paint has dried.
This is a simple, quick and easy project that can add some holiday cheer to any room.
Did you make any Christmas decor this year? Or do you prefer to go the store-bought route?

I have been looking for DIY Christmas Decorations to make this year instead of buying them. I really like this idea and I think I will make a few to hang on the walls around my tree this year. Thank you so much for this wonderful idea! It sounds so easy and inexpensive. I have collected a small collection of foil Christmas tissue papers that wouldn’t even require any stenciled letters. Again, thank you for your idea.
