Note: Part 3 (The “final reveal”) of the boys’ bedroom makeover will air on HLN this Friday (March 29) at 5pm EST & Saturday (March 30) at 8am EST.
The blog may be relatively quiet this week since I have family in town visiting, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t been a busy little bee lately. Last weekend I officially started “project master bedroom makeover” by refinishing our large dresser. Just to recap, I’m making over our (soon-to-be) sitting area first, then moving onto the other side of the room. I have had our bedroom furniture since I was a senior in high school. For years I have wanted new furniture, but it just wasn’t at the top of our priority list (or within our budget). Looking back now, I’m so happy we didn’t get rid of this furniture and decided to give it a new life instead. It’s very good quality, heavy, solid construction furniture. I just wasn’t crazy about the finish. I decided to go white and add some pretty new hardware. Ready to see a before and after?? Here is my Bedroom Dresser Makeover!
Dear dresser, I’m so sorry that I have given you the stink eye for so long. Please forgive me. I have fallen back in love with you.
Before I talk about the specifics of refinishing the dresser, let’s talk about that mirror and lamp. I mentioned before that our old mirror (which actually had been sitting on the floor, leaning against a wall for months) found a new home downstairs in our family room. This left us needing a new mirror for the bedroom. I spotted a mirror that looked exactly like this new one online, but it was a few hundred bucks and therefore well out of our price range. I wanted it, but I didn’t want to break the bank. I decided I would stop dreaming about that mirror and find a suitable alternative, hopefully at HomeGoods since I had a store credit from returning some unused stuff from the boys’ room makeover. So, I’m in HomeGoods, strolling along, pining over this rustic-yet-modern octagon mirror that I would never be able to afford, when BAM, I ran straight into it! The same exact mirror I had seen online and envisioned for above our dresser!
Those of you who are my Instagram buddies helped confirm that I should most definitely without a doubt snatch it up.
And since oversharing is what blogging is basically all about, I’m totally going to tell you that after my store credit, I spent under $40 out of pocket on this. What the what?!?! I was so happy I might’ve done a little jig in the aisle. Or not. I’m not telling. It was a match made in home decorating heaven.
And the lamp? A clearance find from Target. As for the other stuff on the dresser, I brought the white handled vase upstairs from the kitchen (a clearance find last year from Home Decorators Collection). The little navy frame came from Michaels and I made the super easy metallic monogram art inside it. I grabbed a couple of blue books (one of which is “Inspired You” by Miss Mustard Seed) to fit in with the navy color scheme I’m going for in here, and voilĂ !
Ok, now let’s talk details.
I followed the same process I used in my Furniture Painting 101 Tutorial. I used Sherwin-Williams paint in their Harmony formula (zero-VOC, low odor since I was painting indoors) in a semi-gloss finish in Alabaster.
I replaced the wooden knobs with mismatched antiqued brass hardware, all found at Hobby Lobby. I love that they don’t all match but the finish is the same so they coordinate well with each other.
Ok, let’s just look at it one more time.
Next up for the sitting area will be seating, curtains, pillows and artwork. Then onto the other side of the room where I will have to paint the armoire (it came in a set with the dresser), as well as get some night stands and figure out bedding/pillows as well as maybe make a headboard. It will take several months to finish all of this, but I’m happy to have finally gotten started.
Have you refinished any furniture lately? Any room updates or makeovers? Please share!
