Christmas Home Tour 2013

DIY on the Cheap Christmas Home Tour 2013!

I know I’m way late to the “Christmas home tour” game, but I thought I’d jump in and join the fun now that I’ve half-way gotten my act together and decorated a little bit for the holidays. I didn’t go all out this year or anything — we didn’t even put up our brand new pretty tree that we bought after Christmas last year. I’ll explain why very soon. :)

But for now, I’m joining a wonderful group of bloggers for the Everything Christmas Tour and Pinning party this week! Check out Denise Designed for the full line-up and more info!

Welcome to our home …

This little vignette is in our dining room, on top of my flea market console table. I grabbed some branches from the yard and decorated them with mini bulb ornaments from the Target dollar spot.

I included my monogram wreath along with some milk glass and pewter pieces. I brought in some berries and greenery from the yard for pops of red and green.

Our living room doubles as my husband’s office (for now), and he loves mid-century modern and industrial style. I decided to set up a little minimalist, masculine vignette in here.

I like that it’s a combination of rustic mixed in with some modern pieces. I even picked up some antlers at an antique shop in Alabama over the weekend.

I did manage to sneak in a little color though.

The rest of the holiday decor in our home mostly revolves around our two boys. They are 3 and 5 years old and absolutely love this time of year. In our entryway, you will find a sweet Advent calendar made by my mother in-law for our boys. Each pocket has a mini ornament for them to hang on their little tree each day.

Can you tell the boys were in charge of decorating this tree?

My mother in-law has gotten us several pieces of the Willow Tree Nativity, and the boys have a little mini Nativity set too. These are in the butler’s pantry area in the entry hallway. I also made the fern leaf Christmas tree art that sits next to my boys’ mini tree.

As I mentioned above, we did not put our nice, big tree up this year. We did let the kids decorate our little 5 ft tall tree that we’ve had for several years. I made a feather wreath which I hung on the mirror nearby, and I displayed some artwork my oldest son made in preschool last year.

I think this year will be this tree’s “farewell appearance.” We purchased this tree for $25 after we got married. It was pre-lit (at one point) but most of the lights have gone out and we’ve strung new lights on top of the burned out old ones. This year we lost part of the tree stand so it is like the leaning tower of Pisa. (Or Tree-za?) I wedged a couple of shims under it so hopefully it won’t fall over, but it’s still crooked most of the time. It’s pretty much the most pitiful tree ever, but we love it anyway. Our boys had so much fun decorating it with all of their cute ornaments, a few handmade ones, plus my husband’s old ornaments from his childhood. My mother in-law made us a cute quilted tree skirt too. As you can see, most of the ornaments are hung toward the bottom since a 3 year-old and a 5 year-old were in charge of decorating. Someday I will miss the days of the bottom-hanging ornaments.

I included my DIY mason jar lid ornaments on the tree this year.

Ok let’s play “Where’s Erin?” in the photo above.  It’s kind of like “Where’s Waldo” but instead of finding a guy with a red and white striped shirt, you’re looking for me in my bathrobe reflected in one of the bulb ornaments on the tree. Ha! I didn’t notice my reflection until I started editing photos and then I thought it was hilarious so I included it in the post. (Sidenote: I do have on jammies with the robe, and I don’t normally wear a robe but it was freezing cold that morning!)

I’ve also had a lot of fun devoting some extra time to gift wrapping this year. My very first job ever was when I was 16 years old at a Hallmark store in the mall. I worked there all through high school and off and on through college. I honed my “gift wrapping skills” throughout those years, and this year I had fun adding something special like monogrammed clay ornaments and handmade paper tags.

And here’s a little nighttime shot of the tree.

Next year, we will still have a kid tree for the boys to decorate, but mama is going to have a grownup tree too. I already have big plans for next year in general, lots of changes happening and lots of fun things in the works, so stay tuned!

Thanks so much for stopping by for my home tour. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday! Be sure to join our pinning party over at Denise Designed, and visit the other ladies on the tour for some fun holiday decor ideas and inspiration!
