I was recently given the opportunity to create a holiday project using Sharpie markers, and I had a lot of fun coming up with this idea! I created Holiday Place Cards which can also double as gift tags.

I purchased my Sharpie markers at Staples, where I bought a 12-count assorted colors pack (on sale for $6.00), a metallic assorted 4-count pack ($3.39), and a gold metallic 4-count pack ($3.14). Head to Staples and snatch some of these up while they’re on sale! They’re perfect for all sorts of holiday crafts.

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

  • Sharpie Markers in Assorted Colors (I used red and green.)
  • Sharpie Markers Metallics (I used metallic silver and gold.)
  • Package of pre-cut Gift Tags (or Card Stock to cut your own tags)
  • Mini Hole Punch
  • Baker’s Twine
  • Painter’s Tape

I started by turning my gift tags sideways and punching a second hole on the opposite side from the existing hole using my mini hole punch. I wanted two holes so that I could thread my twine through and tie the tag around the napkin and silverware at each place setting. (Or tie them around gifts if you opt to use it as a gift tag instead.)

I taped off different designs with my painter’s tape. Some of them I taped vertically, some horizontally, and others diagonally. I colored the edges with my metallic Sharpie markers, and then slowly and carefully peeled my painter’s tape off. This created a nice crisp line. On some of the place cards, I freehanded little dotted lines around the edges. I really just wanted each card to be unique and different, while still coordinating with each other.

I wrote each name in either red or green.

I created a tassle using gold and white striped baker’s twine (I’ll show you how I did this in another post!), and threaded each strand through the holes of the place card, tying it around the napkin and silverware. You could change up the color scheme and make these place cards for any occasion throughout the year.

I use Sharpie markers all the time, and I especially love the metallic ones for holiday crafting. There are so many possibilities for how you could use them.
