I finally completed my last big project for the nursery, and yes folks you read the post title correctly — I actually sewed some window curtains. You won’t find many sewing projects on this blog and that, my friends, is because I can hardly sew a straight line. But I have to say, I didn’t do a terrible job on these!
It’s not that I don’t enjoy sewing, it’s just that I don’t have a ton of experience and I slightly fear my sewing machine. But I’m happy to report that we got along pretty well during this project. There were no fights, no injuries, no beating anything with a hammer or throwing any sewing machines out the window. And my lines were pretty straight!
As for the pretty fabric, Online Fabric Store was kind enough to provide it for this project. I chose the Suburban Home Ramdsen Yellow Fabric. I tried to make this as easy as possible on myself, so I simply made basic panels and used clips to attach them to the curtain rod. I hemmed about a half inch all the way around, except for the top where I created a 2 inch hem, leaving a small pocket hole in case I ever want to hang it directly on the curtain rod and ditch the clips. I made long panels because I wanted to hang them high. (High and wide makes the ceiling look higher and creates the illusion of more space.) I intended for them to be mostly decorative since they are a linen/cotton blend. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they aren’t quite as sheer as I thought they would be, so paired with the bamboo shades they should provide enough privacy and light blockage. The final dimensions are 88 1/2″ x 50″.
I was pretty proud of this straight-ish line.
I also love that the sunburst shape plays off of the sunburst mirror across the room, which ended up being a coincidence.
Maybe I am slowly getting over my fear of sewing. There might just be more sewing projects in my near future!
Do you love to sew? OrĀ do you find it a littleĀ intimidating/scary like I did?
