Dwell with Dignity Boys’ Bedroom: DIY Window Cornice Kit

If you missed the Dwell with Dignity reveal video, I posted that here and you should definitely check it out! Today I wanted to show you one of the projects I did for the boys’ bedroom in the home. DIYDecorator.com was generous enough to donate one of their DIY Window Cornice Kits, and we customized it with fabric for the room.

The cornice kit is awesome because it’s super easy to assemble, it’s not very heavy, and you can customize it with whatever fabric you want. The fabric was donated also, and it’s a cotton twill in Navy Blazer from Robert Allen.

You can change out the fabric on the cornice anytime. I had one of these in our bedroom at our old house which you can see here. The one for the boys’ room is 16 inches high (they have 3 height options to choose from), and can be sized from 48-96 inches in length. This one has been sized to 80 inches long.

When the cornice arrives, it comes with two large pieces that slide and screw together. You measure and mark it and then cut down each side so that the cornice is your desired length. I used my miter saw, but any saw will do. You don’t need power tools for this, and the design of the cornice allows for imperfections when you cut so no need to stress about your cutting skills. (P.S. Ignore my dirty floor.)

After you’ve cut it down, you slide the end pieces on and screw them in place.

Cover the cornice with the foundation paper and staple it in place. This makes the cornice opaque.

I was really excited to use my new RYOBI 18-Volt ONE+ Cordless Narrow Crown Stapler for this project too. Love it! I can see it quickly becoming one of my favorite tools. It’s easy to use and perfect for a job like this. It uses the same 18-Volt lithiom ion battery as my other RYOBI tools, which I love. It’s available at The Home Depot so go snatch one up. You won’t regret it. :)

Cover the cornice with batting and then fabric, stapling as you go, and that’s it!

Disclosure: I received the RYOBI crown stapler for free. All opinions are my own.
